The Great Debate – Which Desk is Best

Starting think about changing up your workspace? More specifically your desk? This article may help shed some light on what to look and how to decide which desk is best. My solution at home has been to create a couple of different places where I can work comfortably and be my most productive. I'm definitely thinking about changing things up at home and getting a new desk after getting a new stand up desk at the CoWork.

Ultimately it is up to you to determine what you need to do your best work and deciding which desk is best for you. My job as the curator of the space where you work is to provide you with the opportunity to have the right equipment for you. I believe that when people are able to work in a space where they are comfortable, they will outperform their peers who are uncomfortable.

This is your too long, didn’t read paragraph.

The short version of what I think is the desk that is most comfortable for you at any given moment is the best desk. So, if on Monday, you want to sit at a regular office desk with a regular office chair, then that is the best desk. If on Tuesday, you want to be at a standing desk with no chair, then that is the best desk. Which desk is best is all about how you are feeling that day and what you need, to do your best work.

What are the different types of desks

There are a multitude of different types of desks for all sorts of different purposes. Generally in co-working spaces you can expect to find standard height desks, executive style desks, and hopefully a variety of other Heights. Standard height desks are what you would normally find in an office or home. Executive style desks are most likely to be found in higher-end coworks and in private offices that can be rented within a co-working space.

There is a trend toward having standing height desks and alternate height desks beyond standard desks. These can vary in height depending on the user if the desk is modifiable on the fly or dependent on the height of the legs used in construction of the desk.

Which Desk is Best – Standing Desks

Why are we seeing more standing-height desks? it’s pretty simple. people are finding that they are more comfortable and potentially have less pain when they are able to stand and work rather than sitting for long periods of time. With the standing height desk option employees and remote workers no longer have to adhere to the ability to sit for 8 hours a day to qualify for a job. Co-working spaces that are adopting standing height desks provide an alternative to coffee shop height tables and standard desks within the space.

Which Desk is Best – Regular Office Desks

In my opinion, there aren’t really any benefits for regular office desks except that they are readily available and people are familiar with them. I myself prefer to sit at a dining room table which is why there is a gorgeous dining set in the cafe area of ConnectWork on Main.

I also like using the nesting desks I purchased. The nesting desks make it possible for people to sit anywhere they want in the co-work and make that a workspace. The nesting desks are at regular desk height which makes using them fun and familiar. For me, this was a really great find and one of my favorite purchases.

In all seriousness though, regular office desks are something people are used to and have a comfort level with. They know what to do and how to use them. This means that it doesn’t take a lot of thought to decide to sit down and work.

When do we need to use different desk heights

This varies for everyone. I’ll share a few things I have experienced or heard about from others. Here are a few instances when you might need to work at a different desk height

  • Back pain
  • Just because
  • Need to stretch your legs
  • Sitting for too long isn’t good for you
  • You stood for too long yesterday and need to rest today
