Not everything comes down to cold hard numbers. Business may be balance sheets and inventory and assets, but it’s the relationships that make the difference. From nepotism to relationship networking, how we interact with other humans determines if we get the sale, promotion, or referral.

How important are relationships in business?

I feel like this should be obvious. I’m not saying you need to be best friends with everyone you work with or want to work with. My point is that connecting and building relationships with people is one way to move toward your goals. You can read about my experiences with how relationships made the difference in my business here.

How important are relationships in the work you do?

If you don’t know the answer yet, that’s ok. Especially if you are in the early stages of your journey, you may not know if they’ll make a difference. What I can tell you is that No matter what stage of business you’re in, building relationships is always a good idea. It doesn’t mean you will act on things right away, but, thinking long-term, the relationships you build now could save you later.

Where are you now with your relationship building skills

Knowing where you are right now will help you determine what you need to get where you want to go. I start every problem-solving conversation with this idea. Spoiler you need to know where you want to go too, but we’ll get to that.

Here are some questions to help you get a sense of where you are when it comes to building relationships

  • How good are you at building new relationships?
  • How good are you at fostering and maintaining relationships?
  • What are you really good at when it comes to building relationships?
  • What could you work on when it comes to business relationships?

Where do you want to be in your relationship building?

so here’s the fun part. This is where you get to decide where you want to go with your relationship building. If you’ve decided that it’s something that’s important to you, you get to choose how far you go how fast. A few things to think about

  • Who are the people you want to connect or reconnect with?
  • How can you work it into your daily life to reach out?
  • What are you comfortable with when it comes to a meeting?  Video, phone call, etc
  • Do you need help or tools to streamline that process?

What you are planning to do differently when it comes to your relationships?

To change, we have to change too. If you are ready to level up relationships, what are you going to do differently? You don’t have to know right away. Just starting to think about it will help you make more informed decisions later down the line.
